Established 1974
CAT pioneered the use of drama as an educational tool in public
schools. Internationally known for its innovative practices, CAT uses
theatre as a medium to promote social, emotional, and intellectual
growth in communities throughout New York City since its founding in
1974.
The Creative Arts Team (CAT) is the
international leader in Applied Theatre - interactive drama for learning and
change. Originally part of NYU, CAT is now the
resident university-wide arts-in-education program of the nation's largest
urban public university, The City University of New York.
CAT's programs for young people, ages three to
24, strengthen literacy, creativity, critical thinking, and life skills while
guiding participants to examine important curricular and social themes and
issues. Decades of assessments validate
our pioneering approach and methodology.
Our professional development streams, offered through our Paul A.
Kaplan Center for Educational Theatre, provide hands-on education and training
to educators, teaching artists, and parents.
In all, CAT has served more than a half-million young people and tens of
thousands of adults while boosting academic scores and building community
support for children and education.
CAT's impact has been profound.
In response to ongoing requests from our community, in September 2008,
we will introduce the first M.A. in
Applied Theatre in the United States, to train the next generation of
leaders in the profession. One
indication of our outstanding record and reputation is that the NYS Board of
Regents approved our proposal within three weeks of their receiving it; approval
typically takes four to twelve weeks.
CUNY
does not subsidize CAT; we generate our entire $2.5 million budget through
grants, contracts, and contributions from government agencies, foundations,
corporations, and generous individuals who recognize CAT's value, impact, and
importance.
