About CAT

CAT is a nonprofit organization that uses the power of drama to inspire New York City youth to learn more. CAT has served more than a million youth since its founding in 1974.  CAT programs apply drama principles, adapted to each classroom's unique environment, to help students discover and foster their ability to learn.

ELTACAT has a proven track record of strengthening three key life skills: literacy, critical thinking and social-emotional competency. At the heart of CAT is a commitment to helping youth learn how to learn, which has fueled our mission and the development of our unique CATalyst Method(c)(SM pending).

CAT Travels the Globe

CAT Youth Theatre to England

The CAT Youth Theatre traveled to Liverpool, England in July, as the first American company ever selected for the Contacting the World Festival.

CTWThe 15 teens and young adults who made the trip agree that it was a life-changing experience.  Among their most treasured memories are having been "exposed to many different kinds of theatre" and made a new "international group of friends."

CAT extends thanks to the anonymous donor who made a generous challenge grant and the 100+ individuals who helped us surpass the goal to make the project possible.

Professional Development in the United Arab Emirates

From October 4-18, CAT Early Childhood Director Helen Wheelock and Senior Actor- Teacher Steve Elm visited United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) in the city of Al-Ain, United Arab Emirates, in CAT's first exchange with that institution.  Like The City University of New York, UAEU is a top public university in its region.

UAEpuppets"CAT's presence gave our students a unique academic and artistic experience.  They learned to use the arts as a catalyst to learning," said Dr. James Mirrione, an American UAEU faculty member and CAT cofounder who arranged the visit.
