About the High School Program

The Creative Arts Team's High School Program provides interactive drama residencies for students in grades 9 to 12. CAT's professional actor/teachers use a range of strategies and techniques to engage the students and introduce the chosen material. These include dramatic vignettes, role-play, stylized images or tableaux, music, movement and rap, drama games and exercises. Content might be drawn directly from the curriculum or focused on relevant social issues. In either case, the program is cognizant of the many pressures on adolescents and designs its work with these specifically in mind. For many students, CAT's workshops are the first and only place. They can explore their personal opinions, questions and concerns. The overarching aim is always to encourage the young people to think critically so that they can make informed decisions about their own lives. The result is invariably a one-of-a-kind educational experience that students respond to with enthusiasm and seriousness.

"Adolescence is often the most difficult and confusing time for young people to grow personally while continuing to meet academic challenges. Questions of self-identity, peer acceptance, and the transition from child into adult arise. In addition, the daily stressful feelings of anger, fear, depression, and low self-esteem can erupt into violence, racism, or risky sexual behavior. This places not only the adolescents themselves at-risk, but also those around them."
