ASAP held a full-day
retreat at the Wave Hill Cultural
Center in Riverdale, NY
on February 19th. The retreat involved all ASAP staff and student
representatives from all six community colleges and provided them with the opportunity to hold
in-depth discussions about best practices and next steps.
ASAP students from all campuses visited Baruch, Hunter, and John Jay Colleges on consecutive Fridays.
Students toured campuses, learned about the transition from community to senior
college, heard from students and staff about campus life, and met with faculty.
January 2009
ASAP launched a Student Leadership
Program. Four to six ASAP students from each college were nominated by their
advisors to serve together on a leadership team. Students participated in a 2-day
workshop program at the CUNY Graduate Center
led by the CUNY Creative Arts Team (CAT) with a guest CUNY Leadership
Academy. Student teams
identified issues important to their ASAP communities and began to plan an
event to be held at their respective campuses in spring 2009. For more

December 2008
ASAP students and staff attended a
Broadway performance of Arthur Miller's All My Sons. The production provided discounted tickets to ASAP.
November 2008
CUNY Central ASAP launched a professional development
program for advisors and job developers at all campuses. Advisors and job
developers were invited to chose
from a menu of workshops, interactive webinars, and professional conference
opportunities relevant to their daily work with students.
October 2008
The University director facilitated a roundtable on ASAP at the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) national conference at the Marriott Marquis Hotel. On the panel were Presidents Regina Peruggi from Kingsborough and Gail Mellow from La Guardia, ASAP director Lesley Leppert from BMCC, and BMCC ASAP student Nathaniel Wheeler.
ASAP students, advisers, and the ASAP University Director attended a performance of the Broadway musical A Tale of Two Cities. Free tickets were provided to ASAP courtesy of Camp Broadway and the Weiner Nusim Foundation. Click here to read student reviews of the performance!
La Guardia Community College ASAP held a workshop on culturally sensitive advising practices for advisers from across the CUNY ASAP program.
Queensborough
Community College
ASAP students initiated a service learning program focused on higher
education awareness program for pre-teens living at the Saratoga Inn, a
homeless shelter near Kennedy
Airport.
September 2008
ASAP established a new partnership with the Hunter College School of Social Work. Graduate interns from Hunter have been placed at Hostos, Bronx, and LaGuardia Community Colleges for 21 hours each week to provide our students with personalized counseling and referral services. Social work interns are supervised by Hunter faculty and by counseling center staff at each college.
Queensborough
Community College
ASAP established a business partnership with the Queens Medical Society.
Students with interest in careers in the health professions have the
opportunity to work part time at the Medical Society.
Summer 2008
667 ASAP students, or 35% of the cohort, took summer courses to accelerate movement towards graduation.
CUNY Central hosted a
workshop for advisors and job developers at the Graduate Center
in August 2008. Staff from all campuses shared best practices and strategies
for common challenges.
Spring 2008
Borough of Manhattan Community College ASAP students participated in a career fair organized by the ASAP job developer in May 2008. More than 40 employers attended.
CUNY ASAP
hosted a cross-campus event ASAP-wide reception for ASAP students at Hunter College
in April 2008 with CUNY Chancellor Matthew Goldstein and Deputy Mayor Linda
Gibbs.
Kingsborough Community College ASAP students participated in the second round of the ASAP seminar in May 2008. The seminar was taught by ASAP advisors and provided practical approaches to a range of student needs including development of study skills, time management, communication skills, and confidence building.
Bronx
Community College ASAP advisors held a workshop series on a range of issues
impacting student performance, including time management, organization skills,
and note taking.
Fall 2007
On December 12, 2007, a CUNY team testified before the New York City Council Committee for Higher Education. Testimonies were delivered by Selma Botman, Executive Vice Chancellor and University Provost; Annalisa Lewis, ASAP Director, LaGuardia Community College; Richard Rivera, ASAP Director, Kingsborough Community College; and Kevin Jones and Nathaniel Wheeler, ASAP Students, Borough of Manhattan Community College.
