About

"ASAP is a remarkable program that facilitates student success by design. By providing students with the tools and resources they need, we enable them to focus on the job of becoming educated."

Michael Rodriguez, ASAP Academic Advisor
Kingsborough Community College

WHAT is ASAP?
Accelerated Study in Associate Programs (ASAP) offers free tuition, small classes, convenient block schedules, and work experience to enable highly motivated community college students to complete their Associate degrees in less than three years. This pilot program was developed as part of Mayor Bloomberg's Commission for Economic Opportunity Agenda. ASAP seeks to forge a new model for the education and advancement of highly motivated community college students and working adults who are prepared to complete a college degree. In 2007, a qualified cohort of 1,132 students matriculated at each of CUNY's six community colleges. Each of these students is expected to graduate with an Associate degree and move on to a challenging career or further study by 2010. Based on most recent college data, 80% of ASAP students re-enrolled full-time in fall 2008. A similar group of fall 2006 students had a 59% fall-to-fall retention rate.

WHERE does ASAP operate?
All six CUNY community colleges have ASAP programs on their campuses.

  • Borough of Manhattan Community College - Chambers St., Manhattan

  • Bronx Community College - West 181st Street & University Ave.

  • Hostos Community College - 500 Grand Concourse

  • Kingsborough Community College - Oriental Blvd.Brooklyn

  • LaGuardia Community College - Long Island City

  • Queensborough Community College - Bayside, Queens

WHEN did ASAP begin?
The program was conceived in early 2007 and began to identify and enroll students by late spring of that year. Each CUNY community college offered a 2007 pre-college summer program to orient incoming students to ASAP, introduce them to faculty and advisors, and provide any necessary remediation. Full-time college study began in September 2007.

WHY ASAP?
Due to a variety of stresses and responsibilities, too many community college students are not able to complete their Associate degrees in a timely manner, if at all. ASAP helps to eliminate these stresses by providing select community college students with the academic, social, and financial support they need to graduate with an Associate in Arts or Associate in Applied Science degree in no more than three years.

HOW do I apply?
ASAP is now accepting new students for fall 2009 at all six CUNY community colleges. For more information, please follow the college campus links on the right side of our home page or view our brochure.
