In July 2009, ASAP held a full-staff training program on the use of Dr. Skip Downing's advisement curriculum On Course: Strategies for Creating Success in College and in Life. ASAP directors, advisors, career and employment specialists and counselors from the College Discovery program met together at the CUNY Graduate Center for two days of interactive workshops led by Robin Middleton, a faculty member and counselor from Jamestown Community College and a senior On Course staff developer.
On Course is used in community colleges across the country, both in student development and in academic courses. The program has been found to significantly improve student engagement and retention, especially among first-year students. ASAP will adopt the curriculum and textbook for a new program-wide weekly ASAP Seminar, to be delivered at all colleges in 2009-2010.
