ASAP Students

"My desire to learn is stronger than all barriers."

Ivan Martinez, ASAP student at Bronx Community College

ASAP is uniquely designed to remove all barriers that prevent motivated community college students from completing their degrees. Being an ASAP student is like gaining the benefits of a small, close-knit college within the nation’s largest urban university system. Read what the students themselves have to say about ASAP here, or read below for details about the program's defining features.

COST FREE

It takes investment to succeed, and ASAP invests in its students. Students eligible for federal and/or state financial aid receive additional ASAP funding to pay the balance of tuition and school fees so that their education is virtually cost-free. To be eligible for these benefits, students are required to apply for financial aid. All ASAP students are provided with their textbooks, which might otherwise cost as much as $500 each semester. Students who receive public assistance may be eligible for additional benefits. Depending on a student's major, hours in class and at ASAP activities may satisfy a significant portion of the weekly work activity requirement. Students may also be eligible for training-related expenses (TREs) such as child care and travel fare to defray the costs of school attendance. College staff assists with necessary forms and approvals, and also help to plan additional activities (Work Study, WEP, or paid employment) that may satisfy most or all of the weekly work activity requirement without interfering with the student's class schedule.

CONNECTED COMMUNITY

ASAP students benefit from studying in a small, connected group of students who share their interests and drive. ASAP students are grouped into cohorts of no more than twenty-five other students, all of whom share the same academic program. They attend the summer program and classes each semester together, thereby developing close and mutually supportive relationships. Classes are taught by faculty who know ASAP students individually and are committed to helping students realize their full potential.

BLOCK SCHEDULE

It can be challenging and exhausting for community college students to balance a college schedule with the demands of work and family. Each college provides a range of scheduling options designed so that students can attend all classes in a convenient morning, afternoon, or evening block of time that is compatible with their demanding schedules.

ACADEMIC ADVISEMENT and SUPPORT

ASAP students receive the mentoring and guidance they need to succeed. Throughout the academic year, skilled tutors are available to give ASAP students an added academic boost outside the classroom. Depending on college, tutors are available both in and out of the classroom and online. Many ASAP programs have dedicated space for homework assistance and scheduled review sessions for individual courses. An experienced, full-time advisor carefully guides each student's progress, steering students to wise decisions about how to get the most out of their college experiences and plan for their futures. Should ASAP students choose to pursue further study after completing the Associates degree, the advisor will aid the selection, application and transfer process to an appropriate baccalaureate program.

CAREER COUNSELING

ASAP students also have support from full-time job developers who provide comprehensive career-related services. Job developers help students address immediate employment needs and define future career goals. They provide student with individual and group services: job referral, placement and follow-up, interview and resume writing workshops, career fairs, job shadowing, and networking opportunities. ASAP faculty and staff are with ASAP students every step of the way.
