ABOUT THE LEADERSHIP PROGRAM
In the first phase of the ASAP Leadership Program, teams of 4-6 outstanding ASAP students were nominated and selected from each college to participate in a weekend of interactive leadership and team-building activities. Students were selected based on their academic strength, responsibility, leadership potential, ASAP involvement and enthusiasm, and commitment to community service. That weekend event, held in January 2009 at the CUNY Graduate Center, galvanized the student teams as they began to brainstorm plans for the second phase of the program: planning and carrying out an activity to address an issue important within their local ASAP communities during spring 2009.
In dynamic workshops led by the
CUNY Creative Arts Team (CAT) with a special guest from the CUNY Leadership
Academy, students
practiced the many facets of strong leadership: teamwork, confident public
speaking, active listening, advocating for self and others, and promoting
mutual tolerance and respect. The groups
became teams of leaders as they jump-started their own event plans. After the two-day workshop, the Leadership
Teams continue to meet at their home colleges to develop detailed plans for the
activity to be launched on their respective campuses; these plans are underway,
and the events will take place by May 31. Please see the program flyer, project descriptions and team
profiles to see what these students have accomplished!
