The Writing and Literature Degree at BMCC introduces students to great literature and teaches them to turn their own thoughts into polished prose, poetry, plays and journalism. This small, highly personal two-year program in creative writing confers Masters of Fine Arts degrees in fiction, poetry, and playwriting. The primary purpose of the Poetry Outreach Center is to encourage poetic activity--the creation and appreciation of poetry--at all levels of public education. The Latin American Writers Institute (LAWI) was founded by Professor Isaac Goldemberg at The City College of New York in 1987. Housed at Hostos Community College since 1992, LAWI is an organization devoted to promoting Latin American and Latino literature in the United States.

The Publishing Certificate Program of the Center for Black Literature provides students with an awareness of the publishing industry in totality and the skills to obtain an entry level position. Students will have an opportunity to take courses with experts in the field. Required courses include an overview of the publishing industry, online publishing, copyediting, the role of the agent, and graphics and typography. Students are also encouraged to take an internship. The Program is designed to increase the percentage of writers of color in the publishing industry.

The only Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing graduate program in Queens, the most linguistically and culturally diverse borough in New York City! Our program offers tracks in creative writing (poetry, prose, playwriting) and literary translation. Workshops, craft courses and literary seminars are taught by core faculty members, as well as visiting writers.
