Diabetes Prevention and Management at CUNY

Student Workshop

As part of The Campaign’s mandate to increase our student’s capacity to fight diabetes in NYC, we have created the Diabetes Action Team. Students attend a one week intensive diabetes education workshop which prepares them to bring messages on healthier eating, physical activity and health care to their communities, families, workplaces and internship placements.cuny.workshop@gmail.com

Graduate Certificate Program

A masters level certificate in diabetes prevention and management has been developed for graduate students in nursing, nutrition, public health and social work at Hunter College. The certificate program is designed to prepare future health professionals to combat the disease through a multi-disciplinary approach. diabetesedatcuny@gmail.com

Campus Walking Groups

CUNY walking groups have been establish at several campuses for students, faculty and employees. Meeting several times a week participants of all fitness levels take a break from work and go for a walk. All walkers receive a free pedometer and each campus competes for prizes to see which takes the most steps each semester. cunywalks@gmail.com

Diabetes Management Classes

Students, faculty and employees can now get the diabetes education they need conveniently on selected campuses. Classes are taught by certified diabetes educators who provide comprehensive strategies and support for controlling blood sugar, preventing complications and promoting optimal health. cuny.diabetes.ed@gmail.com

Student Diabetes Support Group

This group was formed to unite CUNY students with the disease and give them a forum to share their experiences and help them cope with the concerns of day to day living and going to school with diabetes. The group, led by a student with diabetes, is open to all students with type 1, type 2, gestational or pre-diabetes. cunydiabetessupport@gmail.com
