Students, faculty and employees at Hunter, Medgar Evers and Hostos can get the diabetes education they need, conveniently on campus. Classes are taught by certified diabetes educators who provide comprehensive strategies for controlling blood sugar, preventing complications and promoting optimal health.

Student Workshop:
As part of the campaign's mandate to increase student's capacity to fight diabetes in New York City, we have created the Diabetes Action Team. Students attend a once-per-week, 5-day intensive diabetes education workshop which prepares them to bring messages on healthier eating, physical activity, and healthcare to their communities, families, workplaces, and internship placements.

Campus Walking Groups:
CUNY walking groups have been established at Hunter main campus, Brookdale , Medgar Evers, and Hostos for students, faculty and employees. Meeting two times a week, rain or shine, participants of all fitness levels, take a break from work, and go for a walk. All walkers receive a free pedometer, and each campus competes for prizes to see which takes the most steps each semester.

Diabetes Alert Day:
The American Diabetes Alert Day is a one-day, "wake -up" call to inform the American public about the seriousness of diabetes. The American Diabetes Association encourages people to take the Diabetes Risk Test and find out if they, or their loved ones, are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes.

Student Diabetes Support Group:
The CUNY Diabetes Support Group was formed to unite students with the disease so they have a forum to share their experiences and help them cope with the concerns of day to day living and going to school with diabetes. The group is opened to all students diagnosed with type 1, type 2, gestational, or pre-diabetes. Diabetes support groups are a valuable resource that provides a great way to stay up to date with the latest diabetes self-management strategies and tools.
Meetings are held on the first and third Wednesday of each month at 1:30 pm at Hunter College.

The CUNY Certificate In Diabetes Prevention & Management:
A masters level sequence of courses in diabetes prevention and manage-ment has been developed for graduate students in the nursing, nutrition, public health and social work programs at Hunter College. This 12 credit certificate program is designed to prepare future health professionals to combat the epidemics of diabetes and obesity through a multi-disciplinary approach.
Requirements
1. All students take two courses:
Interdisplinary Approaches to Diabetes Management, PH 770.13
Interdisplinary Approaches to Diabetes Prevention, PH 770.14
2. With faculty adviser select two of the following:
Urban Health Promotion, PH 710
Gerontology, COMHE 730
Principles of Public Health Nutrition, NURT 710
Nutrition in Health Promotion and Disease Prevention, NURT 720
Community Health Interventions, COMHE 751
Urban Health Care Systems, NURS 704
Health Promotion & Disease Prevention for AP RNs, NURS 749
3. Field work:
A minimum of 120 hours of field placement directly related to the prevention or management of diabetes is required. This can be completed as part of other fieldwork placement.
