The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship  http://www.act.org/goldwater/

Purpose of the Award:  The Goldwater Scholarship, named in honor of former Arizona Senator Barry M. Goldwater, is intended to assure a continuing supply of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers by providing financial assistance for outstanding undergraduates pursuing academic study and research in these fields.  Candidates who intend to study medicine are eligible only if they plan a career primarily focused on research such as an MD/PHD program.

Nature of the Award:  The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation will award 300 Goldwater scholarships of $7,500.00 each year to cover costs incurred during the final one or two years of undergraduate study.  In the current application cycle, the awards will be made on the basis of merit to two groups of students- those who will be college juniors and those who will be college seniors in the 2010 - 2011 academic year and who have outstanding potential and intend to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences or engineering.  Four year institutions may nominate up to four students who are in the sophomore or junior class during the 2009 - 2010 academic year.  Two year intuitions may nominate up to two students who are sophomore during the 2009 - 2010 academic year.  Typically, in any given year, there are about 1,000 applicants.  Interested students should begin the process by contacting their campus Goldwater representative.

Eligibility:

  • Candidates must be American citizens, resident aliens or US nationals
  • Candidates should have at least a 3.5 GPA and have engaged in a substantive, research project overseen by a faculty or outside research mentor.
  • The selection committee will also consider the extent to which the letters of recommendation and the institutional nomination confirm that the candidate has the commitment and ability to make a significant contribution their field of study.
  • Financial need is not a criterion for selection.
