STOCS Winter 2009-10 FAQ

STOCS Program Frequently Asked Questions (Students)

When is the deadline?
The deadline to submit applications for the Winter 2009-10 scholarship is October 12, 2009.  Applications must be hand-delivered or post-marked by that date.

Can I turn in my application after the deadline?

No. Due to the competitive nature of the scholarships, only applications submitted by the deadline will be considered.

Can I bring my application to the STOCS office?
Yes. A box will be available at the Security Desk in the main lobby where you can submit applications. The STOCS office is located at 535 East 80th Street, New York, NY 10075.

How do I get to the STOCS office?
By subway, take the 6 line to 77th Street. Walk north to East 80th Street and then east to 535 East 80th (between York and East End Avenues). Alternatively, take the M79 bus from points west in Manhattan to the corner of East 80th and East End Avenue. Please refer to www.hopstop.com and enter your individual starting location for further directions.

How will I know if my application has been received?
Within a week of the application deadline (October 12), expect a confirmation email message from the International Education office. At this time, you will also be notified if any application materials are missing.

What if my transcript is missing?
We will alert you if your transcript is missing the week of October 12 via email. Please check with the registrar’s office at your college. Unfortunately, we will not be able to consider your application for STOCS without a transcript.

What if my letter of recommendation is missing?
We will alert you if your letter of recommendation is missing the week of October 12 via email. Please check with the person you asked to write the letter of recommendation. Please remind your recommender that the Recommendation Form (Form D.1 in the STOCS scholarship application) should be attached with the letter of recommendation. The letter should be submitted on official letterhead in a sealed envelope with the recommender’s signature across the seal.

What is the most important part of the application?

The committee reviews your entire application equally. It is important that your personal statement is well written and addresses how your participation in this particular study abroad program will advance your personal, educational, and/or career goals. You may want to ask one of your professors or a tutor at your college's writing center to review your essay statement before you submit your application.

What is the minimum GPA?

There is no minimum GPA for a STOCS grant. However, all the STOCS-eligible study abroad programs require students to have a minimum GPA that varies from program to program.

When will I find out if I have been awarded a STOCS grant?

Winter 2009-10 STOCS award recipients will be notified on or after November 13, 2009 via email.

When will I receive my money if I am awarded a STOCS grant?

The STOCS program will send the grant to the study abroad program after the award decisions have been made.
Please check with your program director for specific information.
