GEP Workshop Series for Junior Faculty
FALL 2009 APPLICATION DEADLINE: 8 SEPTEMBER 2009
Description:
Hunter College, the GEP, and CUNY Central join NSF in the goal of contributing to the development of a national science and engineering academic workforce that includes the full participation of women and minorities at all levels of faculty and academic administration. The GEP Workshop Series for Junior Faculty has as its goal the professional development of male and female junior faculty who are engaged in basic science and engineering at participating CUNY schools. The workshop series includes a broad range of techniques and skills that are important for professional success. Five broad categories of workshops will be offered: career development, writing and publishing, mentoring, balancing work and personal life, and leadership.
Each workshop integrates material on the role of race and gender as determinants of professional success. The workshops are designed to increase scholarly productivity and leadership, and will include discussions on how to develop individual, institutional, and discipline-level solutions to the under-representation of women and minority-status scholars.
Drs. Virginia Valian, Vita Rabinowitz, and Annemarie Nicols-Grinenko will run the workshops, related activities, and evaluations of the effectiveness of the workshops. The GEP Workshop Series for Junior Faculty includes three full days (10:00 am to 5:00 pm) of workshops at Hunter College:

Participant Comments from Previous Series
Spring 2008
“It was nice to have a forum focused on guiding junior faculty to succeed. It was also great to meet with others in the same place, to feel a sense of community. It is at times isolating as you work your way toward tenure, so this workshop helped provide direction and guidance via group discussion etc. Thanx!”
“ It has encouraged me – helped me believe that this career is really something that I can handle/succeed at."“ It was great to finally feel some support with this big transition in my life. I have felt very on my own until today.”
Fall 2007
"I learned a significant amount about what I need to do for the next few years as junior faculty."
"There is no way I would have written the grant without the support of the program. My proposal changed drastically between reviews. I really needed the time to write and the feedback."
"Theoretical background and empirical evidence was superb! Don't change a thing!"
"Thank you so much for allowing me to participate in the program. I found it incredibly helpful and I have definitely learned a great deal and learned to think differently about my research. This experience truly helped."
