The Graduate School and University Center
Founded in 1961, the Graduate Center is devoted primarily to doctoral studies and awards most of the City University of New York's Ph.D.s. An internationally recognized center for advanced studies and a national model for public doctoral education, the Graduate Center draws its more than 1600-member faculty from the other CUNY colleges, augmented by a core group of about 125 Graduate Center appointments. Many of its faculty members are among the world's leading scholars in their respective fields, and its alumni hold major positions in industry and government, as well as in academia.
Programs in the humanities, social sciences, and mathematics and
some non-laboratory science coursework are offered at the Graduate Center,
while science research and the professional programs (Business, Engineering,
Criminal Justice, Social Welfare) are located on CUNY college campuses. Some programs have research affiliations with
New York City's
world-class cultural and scientific institutions. In addition, the Graduate Center
offers seven master's degree programs. Also affiliated with the Graduate Center
are three University Center programs: the CUNY Baccalaureate Program, the School of Professional Studies, and the Graduate
School of Journalism (master's degree).
